Aspects of Regional Climate Modelling with Focus on Precipitation

This paper discusses some general aspects of regional climate modelling with a special focus on precipitation, and gives an overview of current activities in this area. Furthermore, we present a model evaluation study where we investigate the ability of a specific regional climate model, the COSMO-CLM, to represent statistical characteristics of daily precipitation in Germany. Since the model performance and uncertainty reveals large variability between different regions, we recommend specific evaluation studies before using a regional climate model which has not been applied and tested before in Eastern Europe.
