Samenvatting
De term ‘whiplash’ wordt tegenwoordig meestal gebruikt om de subacute en chronische gevolgen van een nektrauma aan te duiden. De oorspronkelijke betekenis (Crowe, 1928) gold uitsluitend de typische beweging die het hoofd maakt bij een plotselinge versnelling van het lichaam in voorwaartse richting. Het voorbeeld daarvan is in de geïndustrialiseerde en gemotoriseerde samenleving het lot van de inzittenden van de voorste auto bij een kop-staart botsing c.q. bij een aanrijding van achteren. Om elk misverstand te voorkomen, is in het onderstaande onderscheid gemaakt tussen het ‘whiplash-trauma’ en het ‘whiplash-syndroom’.
