Samenvatting
‘Multiple system atrophy’, hier verder ‘multipele systeem atrofie’ (MSA) te noemen, is een zeldzame en ernstige neurologische aandoening met een onbekende oorzaak. De ziekte dankt zijn naam aan pathologisch-anatomische (PA) bevindingen. Er is momenteel geen enkele doorslaggevende test die (tijdens het leven!) met zekerheid kan uitmaken of een patiënt aan MSA leidt. De diagnose moet tijdens het leven dan ook op klinische gronden worden gesteld, wat neerkomt op ‘waarschijnlijk worden geacht’. De hoofdkenmerken van MSA zijn (1):
