Riassunto

Negli ultimi anni lo studio della sclerosi multipla (SM) in età pediatrica ha suscitato un crescente interesse nel mondo scientifico. La nozione che la malattia può esordire sotto i 16 anni nel 3–5% dei casi, il numero crescente di studi pubblicati, la possibilità di usare farmaci altamente attivi e, infine, la possibilità di studiare meglio la malattia stessa perché più vicini al suo effettivo inizio, sono tra i fattori che spiegano questa maggiore attenzione. Nel contempo sono stati puntualizzati gli aspetti diagnostici per una più corretta definizione dei casi, in particolar modo in relazione alla differenziazione dall’encefalomielite acuta disseminata (Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis, ADEM), e quelli terminologici, definendo come forma infantile quella a esordio prima dei 10 anni d’età, e forma adolescenziale quella a esordio tra 10 e 18 anni (Krupp et al., 2007).
