Il versamento parapneumonico e l’empiema sono un problema clinico rilevante, sia per la loro elevata incidenza che per la tuttora significativa mortalità [1, 2]. Sono infatti ancora oggi frequenti alcuni fattori di rischio per la loro insorgenza, come l’etilismo, il diabete, la scarsa igiene orale, il reflusso gastro-esofageo e la tossicodipendenza [2, 3]. é perÒ anche noto che in un terzo circa dei casi non è possibile identificarne alcuno [2].
