Summary

Although many advances have been made in the management of pancreatic cancer, especially in diagnosis, surgical techniques, and control of morbidity and mortality, the survival rate is still very poor according to the series reported by referral centers. These groups have reported a mortality rate that ranges between 0.2% and 5% and survival of 3%-10% at 5 years. The only curative procedure is radical resection, extended to the vessels invaded by tumor, and because of this attitude the resectability rate has increased to about 30%. Unfortunately, pancreatic cancer is still a dreadful disease, except in types such as ampullary, distal common bile duct, and duodenum cancer, in which the survival rate has been reported to be as high as 50%–60%.
