Static and Dynamic Magnetizations of 3-D Textured and Monocrystalline Bi:2212

Abstract

M-H loops and magnetization decay measurements have been performed on Bi:2212 samples of two kinds: (1) a single crystal (from ISTEC, sample denoted ISC), and (2) a series of melt grown cylinders with different lengths (from JFCC, samples denoted JFC). Both sample types were prepared by a float zone technique applied to sintered feedstock. The ISC monocrystal was extracted from the float zone processed rod (which consisted of a number of non-aligned monocrystals) [1,2]. In the case of the JFC samples, however, 10 wt % Ag was added to the starting composition, allowing a strong 3-D texturization, and the zone processed rod was taken as the sample (which was then cut and ground to size) [3–6]. The JFC samples were well connected within the a-b planes, although some cracking was evident parallel to them. Previous magnetic measurements on similar JFC samples showed them to be well aligned [7]. The c-axis projected out the sides of the JFC cylinders, and along the thickness direction (shortest sample dimension) of the ISC monocrystal. Sample dimensions are given in Table 1.
