Studies on Temporal Design for Visual Fields

Abstract

The study of temporal design in architecture and art is a relatively new concept, as for the most part, problem-solving in these disciplines has been primarily concerned with spatial aspects. Applications for temporal design theory are discussed on the basis of a few examples from the visual field that stimulate the left hemisphere, potentially yielding logical and sequential creations. To attain basic data for the temporal design of a landscape associated with the left hemisphere, camphor leaves moving in natural wind are analyzed by means of the autocorrelation function (ACF) of the image movement. Acoustic tempo that matches the movement of the camphor leaves is investigated by use of the average τ 1 extracted from the ACF of the image. A condition of the most preferred movement of camphor leaves is thus obtained. In addition, an artistic drawing as an example of spatial design is discussed.
