Abstract

In Japan, with advances in image-guided radiation therapy, many retrospective clinical trials have been made in order to examine the effect and safety of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for early stage lung cancer. The results of these trials were quite promising. On the basis of these results, the Japan Clinical Oncology Group (JCOG) launched the new study group in it, which is the JCOG Radiation Therapy Study Group. This group has conducted two prospective clinical trials; one is the JCOG0403 and the other is the JCOG0702. The JCOG0403 showed that SBRT was a standard treatment for patients with stage IA lung cancer who could not be candidates for surgery, and that SBRT could be presented as an alternative for patients with the same stage who refused surgery. The JCOG0702 proved that the increase of the total dose could be safely with SBRT for patients of T2 lung cancer.
