Experimental Bilayer Membrane Models
Conference paper
Abstract
The structure of cellular membranes is a central problem in biology. Interest in structure at the subcellular level derives primarily from the realization that the functional properties of biological membranes are a product of the molecular arrangement and the physical properties of the component molecules. The widely accepted hypothesis of membrane organization advanced by D a v s o n and Danielli has the phospholipid component arranged in the form of a bimolecular sheet. On the basis of this hypothesis it is evident that many of the physical properties of biological membranes will be related to the corresponding properties of a phospholipid bilayer.
