Statical Problem of a Rigid Punch
Chapter
Abstract
Another problem leading to infinite stress concentrations follows from the consideration of a rigid, smooth and flat-ended punch acting on the surface of an elastic body. The problem of such a punch of finite dimensions (in the plane state of strain) was considered by Muki and Sternberg ([2]) in 1965. Let us pass to more detailed discussion of a similar problem solved in [20] and concerning an infinite elastic strip compressed between two perfectly rigid blocks extending from x = 0 to plus infinity (Fig. 20). The problem is solved with the aid of the stress functions φ, ψ introduced in Sect. 4, Eqs. (4.19), (4.20).
