Abstract

Chronic tendinopathy of the adductor muscles/tendons, especially of the adductor longus, is the most frequently diagnosed cause of groin pain. Early diagnosis avoids loss of time from competition and chronic degenerative changes. This condition is common in young athletes, typically in soccer, and is usually related to excessive abuse of adductors with strains and acute inflammation. From an acute syndrome, tendinopathy can evolve to a chronic condition and progressive groin pain. A complete physical examination with evaluation of mobility and point of tenderness is required. Ultrasonography is indicated as the first imaging modality followed by a MRI if doubts still exist. Therapy varies from a conservative to surgical treatment.
