HLA Studies in Southern Chinese Suggest Hypotheses for Associations with Autoimmune Disease
Chapter
Abstract
Studies of HLA and autoimmune disease in Caucasians show a clear role for a gene or genes associated with B8 and DR3 in predisposing to autoimmunity. Autoimmune disease in Chinese occurs with a comparable prevalence to that in Caucasians but B8 and DR3 are rare, and DR3 usually occurs in linkage disequilibrium with B17 rather than B8. HLA studies of a number of autoimmune diseases among the predominantly southern Chinese population of Hong Kong have shown striking parallels to the findings in Caucasians.
