Zusammenfassung

Zwischen SE-England mit seinem von den Downs umringten Weald im E einerseits, die älteren Uplands der SW-Halbinsel und das Severnästuar im W andererseits schaltet sich Mittelsüdengland ein. Es reicht von der Ärmelkanalküste ungef. 80–100 km binnenwärts, ist aber gegen seine Umgebung nur mit einer gewissen Willkür abgrenzbar. Denn von allen Seiten her entsenden die Nachbarlandschaften Ausläufer und Auslieger, verschiedene natürliche Einheiten verwachsen oder verzahnen sich in ihm miteinander und ihnen entsprechend auch die kulturgeographischen Züge. So fällt es weder mit einer natürlichen Landschaft zusammen noch deckt es sich mit einem bestimmten, in sich einheitlichen Wirtschafts- oder Verwaltungsgebiet. Nur im großen ganzen kann man es als den SW-Flügel der englischen Stufenlandschaft auffassen, nur annähernd mit dem Raum des chemaligen Kgr. Wessex gleichsetzen, nur annähernd mit der Fl. der vier Gr. Hampshire, Wiltshire, Somerset und Dorset, umfaßt es doch auch einen Teil der chemals fast ganz zu Wessex gehörigen Gr. Berkshire; und doch könnte man es nicht ohne weiteres auf die Nachbarlandschaften aufteilen. Ihnen gegenüber hebt es sich vor allem durch seine Mittellage heraus, durch diese erhält es trotz aller Verknüpfungen eine selbständige Stellung in seiner Rolle als Verbindungs- und als Übergangsgebiet.
