Zusammenfassung
Obwohl schon seit langem bekannt ist, dass ionisierende Strahlung Leukämien und andere Krebserkrankungen auslösen kann (Andrieu et al.1990; Baccarani et al.1980; Bartolucci et al.1983; Boice et al.1996; Gassmann u. Slanina 1993; Glicksman et al. 1982; Sabatier et al. 1995; Valagussa et al.1986,1987), wurde diese Gefahr lange Zeit aus dem Bewusstsein verdrängt und es erfolgte ein relativ sorgloser Umgang mit potentiellen Expositionen. So waren beispielsweise in den 50er-Jahren besonders fortschrittliche Schuhgeschäfte mit Röntgengeräten ausgestattet, in denen insbesondere für Kinder der Sitz der neuen Schuhe überprüft werden konnte. Im Rahmen militärischer Übungen wurden US-Soldaten bewusst der radioaktiven Strahlung von Atombomben ausgesetzt.
