Abstract
In this chapter we will describe how data transmission is performed within the GSM system. First we provide the basics of circuit- and packet-switched data modes (Sects. 3.1 and 3.2). Also the protocols used are briefly explained. To determine performance of the GSM link, both uncoded and with channel coding, we made link level simulations on bit level (Sect. 3.3). Therein we used a realistic channel model (COST 207 [96]). However, bit-level simulations are very time consuming and not suited as an underlying module for simulations of higher-layer protocols (which we present in Chap. 5). Thus we developed a block error model from the link level simulations that is used subsequently as replacement for the bit-level simulations (Sect. 3.4). At the end of this chapter we will give a summary.
