Abstract
Malignant melanoma is a malignant tumor originating from the transformation of melanocytes or nevus cells. These cells, mostly arising from the neural crest are not only encountered in the skin and the mucous membranes surrounding the skin, but also in the uvea, the retina and the central nervous system. Nonetheless, between 85% and 90% of melanomas arise on the outer skin.
