Abstract
This chapter deals with laser-induced surface modifications based on the depletion or exchange of one or several components of a material; it includes cases where the solid surface is decomposed so that only a single component or a mixture of components of the original material remains. Among the many examples found in the literature (Appendix B.10), we shall discuss in further detail the reduction and metallization of oxides, surface modifications of polymers, and chemical transformations of spun-on films.
