Abstract

The diagnosis and treatment of the so-called anal symptom complex belongs to the field handled by dermatologists — in collaboration with gastroenterologists and surgeons. The most important conditions included are hemorrhoids and their complications as well as dermatoses that tend to be very marked or common in the anal or perianal regions. Disorders in the functionally complicated anorectal system are very common: approximately 70% of all adults have rectal or anal symptoms. It is generally possible to arrive at a diagnosis on the basis of a precise history and the use of relatively few inexpensive methods of medical investigation.

Synonym

Piles. Acute anal venous thrombosis.
