This book is about support work relationships – the relationships between persons with intellectual disabilities using a personal budget (PB) and their support workers. This introductory chapter sets the scene for this book. It starts by explaining the rationale for the study which includes the researcher’s personal motivation to undertake a study about support work relationships, as well as the context and background to the research topic. The chapter then introduces the conceptual approach to support work relationships and the methodology of the study. It ends by discussing the role of language, clarifying important terms and giving an overview of how the book is structured.
