Driver fatigue is a major cause of road accidents. As naturalistic driving data of more than 3500 participants from the U.S. show, fatigue increased the risk of a crash by 3.4 times compared to alert driving (Dingus et al., 2016). In an earlier analysis of naturalistic driving data, it was found that 20 % of single-vehicle crashes and 23 % of near-crashes are related to fatigue (Dingus et al., 2006).
