On June 1, 2016, the statue of Habib Bourguiba, Tunisia’s first president after the country’s independence in 1956, was inaugurated in the city center of Tunis. He is depicted on his horse, overlooking the avenue of his name, behind him what has become the town’s and countries’ landmark: The clock at the round square that was renamed “Place of the 14th of January” in commemoration of Ben Ali’s escape to Saudi Arabia. After 24 years of dictatorial rule under President Ben Ali, the inauguration marks the re-appearance of a specific type of political leader.
