Abstract

“[…] but I needed that first night to be alone. I needed to be alone so that he could come back” (Didion, 2005, p. 33). With these words, American best-selling author and National Book Award winner Joan Didion described her thinking shortly after her husband suddenly and unexpectedly died the evening before. Her autobiographical book The Year of Magical Thinking in which these words appeared comprises an authentic account of her intensive grief after the sudden loss.
