Abstract

This chapter provides a short overview of the situation of media in Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. Several of the aspects described in this chapter are covered more in depth in Part III, where they are analyzed due to their nature as context factors for the emergence of media accountability, and due to additional information provided by interviewees in 2013 and 2014. This chapter seeks to provide a general understanding of the media landscapes in the countries under study during the presidencies of Cristina Kirchner, José Mujica, and Dilma Rousseff, including the media’s relationship to the political, legal, and economic systems, as well as to society.
