Die große Masse an Gütern lässt sich effizient auf dem See- oder Landweg transportieren. Im Vergleich zu diesen Transportträgern nimmt das Flugzeug nur eine kleine Nische ein. Die Luftfracht umfasst gerade einmal 1 % der weltweit transportierten Menge. Sie repräsentiert nach Angaben der IATA aber andererseits 35 % des gesamten transportierten Warenwerts (Shepherd et al. 2016).
