Abstract
This chapter summarizes the state of the art relevant to the technology that has been developed in the frame of this thesis. First, it explains the scope and delimitations of this work, before it describes the emergence of smartphones and wireless communication technologies in the context of smartphones. Against this background the chapter examines several approaches that enable mobile ad-hoc communication and reviews the extent to which the approaches meet the quality attributes described in section 5.2. Finally, this chapter concludes with the choice of the most appropriate wireless communication technology for implementing resilient mobile ad-hoc communication systems.
