Der Architekturbegriff wird heute in zahlreichen Disziplinen verwendet und als ein Schwerpunkt auch im Bereich Informationstechnik (IT) bei der Gestaltung von Software-Projekten benutzt. Das Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) definiert den Begriff Architektur im IT-Umfeld wie folgt: „The fundamental organization of a system embodied in its components, their relationships to each other, and to the environment, and the principles guiding its design and evolution“.
