Abstract
This chapter deals with herbal agents beneficial in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders. A number of diverse symptoms, including anorexia, dyspepsia, flatulence, and constipation, fall within the domain of herbal medicine. Most herbal gastrointestinal remedies are used to treat functional complaints. Only certain of these medications are covered by health insurance in Germany. Many remedies, such as laxatives, are not covered by insurance and are subject to over-the-counter purchase and use. In all cases the family physician has a responsibility to offer appropriate counseling and guidance, even to patients who self-.medicate their gastrointestinal problems.
