Conjunctival Tumors and Their Radiotherapy

Abstract

The conjunctiva is often affected by neoplasms and by lesions that may simulate neoplasms, especially in elderly patients. This discussion of conjunctival tumors and their radiotherapy will follow the nomenclature, definition, and classification suggested by Zimmerman and Sobin (1980) in volume 24 of the World Health Organization International Classification of Tumors. Most of the conditions listed in this outline, such as Pinguecula, corneal celloid, dermoid, dermolipoma, episcleral osseous choristoma, complex choristoma, benign epithelial tumors, and the inflammatory tumor-like lesions should not be treated by radiotherapy, and are mentioned briefly for systematic reasons. However, lesions such as recurrent pterygium, malignant epithelial tumors, tumors and tumor-like lesions of the melanogenic system, and tumors and tumor-like lesions of the hematopoietic and lymphoid tissues are worthwhile targets for radiotherapy.
