The Hand

Abstract

The technique of internal fixation of the bones in the hand is difficult, and the surgeon assumes great responsibility. A thorough knowledge of the contents of the instrument set and a good grasp of the functional anatomy of the hand are indispensable. Delicate atraumatic treatment of the soft tissues is essential to preserve full mobility. Unsuitable incisions and injury to the peritendinous layers and capsule of the joints can result in permanent stiffness. Experience has, however, shown that rigid internal fixation enables us to achieve much better results than the previously used procedures, provided that the techniques described are adhered to carefully.
