Zusammenfassung
Der Hauptteil des Buches (Teil B) besteht aus den Abbildungen der IR-Spektren von 900 Steroidsubstanzen. Zur näheren Charakterisierung der betreffenden Verbindungen sind den Spektren jeweils der Name, die Summen- und Konstitutionsformeln, das Molgewicht und eine laufende Nummer beigegeben worden. Die ebenfalls aufgeführten physikalischen Konstanten wie Schmelzpunkt, optische Drehung, Dipolwert und UV-Absorptionsdaten sollen die Substanzen charakterisieren und gleichzeitig ein Maß für die Reinheit der hier verwendeten Steroide darstellen. Der drucktechnisch besonders hervorgehobenen Subsfanznummer kommt im gesamten Buch eine besondere Bedeutung zu, da sie bei sämtlichen Vergleichen, Betrachtungen, Tabellen usw. immer anstelle des Substanznamens verwendet wurde. Außerdem ist sie die Schlüsselnummer für Register und Karteiverschlüsselung. Wir hoffen, den Text dadurch übersichtlich gestaltet und Irrtümern weitgehend vorgebeugt zu haben, auch wenn die Anschaulichkeit etwas leiden sollte oder der Benutzer zum Nachschlagen gezwungen wird.

Abstract
The principal part of the book (part B) consists of the reproduction of the IR spectra of 900 steroids. In order to characterize the compounds concerned more precisely, the name, the molecular and structural formulae, the molecular weight and a serial number have been attached to each spectrum. The additional physical properties which are mentioned, such as melting point, optical rotation, dipole moment and UV absorption data, should serve to identify the compounds and at the same time provide a measure of their purity. The compound number, which is especially emphasized by heavy print, has a special significance throughout the book, as it is used In all comparisons, analyses, tables etc. instead of the name of the compound. In addition it is the key number for the index and the code of the card system. We hope that this makes the text easy to follow and avoids confusion as far as possible even though it necessitates cross referencing.
