Three-dimensional simulation of tumor growth and treatment
Abstract
The main problem discussed in this paper is focused on the question how to simulate three-dimensional tumor growth and treatment in a vascularized tissue segment. The starting points for this procedure are (i) idealized cellkinetic data of normal cells and of tumor cells, (ii) simplified cell-cycle models of normal cells and of tumor cells, and (iii) production and interaction rules of the individual cells. Algorithms and program packages have been constructed describing the spatial and temporal tumor growth. An example of simulating a chemotherapeutic treatment is given. As a result it becomes possible to simulate different kinds of tumor treatment e.g. surgical removal, radiation therapy and chemotherapy prior to clinical therapy and to develop optimized treatment schedules.
