On the Need for Membership Grades in Fuzzy Sets

  • Chapter
Current Topics in Cybernetics and Systems

Abstract

Fuzzy sets have shed much light on the problem of imprecision in human thinking. The problem of evaluating the membership grades in using fuzzy sets has somewhat limited its applicability. This paper shows that many uses involving fuzzy sets only require ordinal information with respect to membership grades. This has the effect greatly reducing the information need in using fuzzy sets and making it, indeed, a method for handling imprecision.
