Zusammenfassung
Der sogenannte Mongolismus wurde im Jahre 1866 von Langdon-Down (5) beschrieben, welcher die geistige Zurückgebliebenheit als eine Regression zu primitiven Rassen ansah und eine „ethnische Klassifizierung der Schwachsinnigen“ gab. Eine Gruppe von Schwachsinnigen hat eine gewisse oberflächliche Ähnlichkeit zur mongolischen Rasse, daher wurde diese zur „mongolischen Form des Schwachsinns“ gerechnet. Diese Theorie wurde bald aufgegeben, der ursprüngliche Name aber, obzwar unzureichend, blieb bestehen.
