Abstract

The correct surgical approach can have a major bearing on the outcome of an abdominal operation. The following criteria should be kept in mind when selecting an incision:
  • It must provide adequate exposure,

  • It must give rapid access,

  • It should allow a secure anatomic closure that preserves the strength of the abdominal wall,

  • It should give an acceptable cosmetic result.
