Reinnervation of Rat Vibrissae After Hypoglossal-Facial Anastomosis: A Horseradish-Peroxidase Study
Abstract
The movement of whiskers in rat is solely controled by motoneurons of the facial nerve. Hence the musculature of the whiskerpad is a good model to study the time course of mimic reinnervation after hypoglossal-facial-anastomosis (HFA) in this animal. We have investigated this question morphologically (for physiological data see: Schneider et al., this symposium), counting the number of motoneurons that were labeled by retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) injected into the whiskerpad at different postoperative survival times. These results were compared with the normal number of HRP-labeled facial motoneurons (HRP applied into the whiskerpad of the nonoperated contralateral side).
