Abstract

The efforts to put into operation software which is reliable, safe and available include a variety of constructive and analytical measures. Constructive measures comprise activities like top-down design, stepwise refinement etc., that means all the methods and rules to specify, design, code and maintain reliable software. The constructive measures are accompanied by analytical ones which are introduced in the various steps of the software life cycle to find faults and inefficient constructs and also to give an increasing confidence in the reliability of the software.
