Abstract

Limb-sounding high-resolution emission spectroscopy in the far-infrared can be used for measuring the composition of the Earth’s stratosphere. The results obtained with balloon-borne instruments are reviewed; they give proof that this relatively unexploited spectral region provides valuable new measurements with reliable accuracy. The measurement capabilities that could possibly be provided in the future by space-borne instruments are briefly evaluated.
