Abstract

The oral cavity, after the larynx, is the most common site of head and neck cancers (Silverberg and Lubera 1988). The structures included within the oral cavity are the lips, mobile tongue, floor of mouth, buccal area, hard palate, maxillary and mandibular gingiva and the corresponding alveolar ridges. The incidence of lip cancers is decreasing and may be due to occupational changes, increased public awareness of solar damage and frequent use of protective sunscreen agents. Early intraoral carcinomas are usually asymptomatic and may go undetected until moderately advanced. Most intraoral tumors arise in a horse-shoe shaped area involving the floor of mouth, retromolar trigone and ventrolateral tongue, an area less than 25% of the total mucosal surface. Pooled saliva containing carcinogens from tobacco products and the direct irritation of alcohol are felt to be important etiological factors in this high risk area.
