Abstract
Lesions of uncertain nature that are detected by palpation, mammography, or sonography are an indication for incisional biopsy. Despite advances in aspiration cytology, the open excision and subsequent histologic examination of breast tissue, though more costly, offers the most dependable proof of the nature of breast disease. In all open biopsies an effort should be made to excise the lesion completely with adequate margins, even if this involves an appreciable sacrifice of breast tissue.
