Abstract

Fetuin, an alpha 1-glycoprotein (MW : 48 kD) was firstly isolated from bovine foetal serum (4). Dziegielewska et al. (1) recently gave evidence that a fetuin-like antigen (FLA) was present in early human foetal samples but not later in gestation. We have shown that FLA was not detectable in normal human sera (< 5 μg)l) but was present at a concentration ranging from 10 to 80 μg/1 in a few disorders in which the immune System was involved and in sera of patients with tumours derived from the neutral crest or with nephroblastoma (2). In neurological disorders, FLA was found in sera from patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), Guillain-Barré Syndrome, neurosyphilis and peripheral, mainly diabetic, neuropathies, but was rarely detected in cerebrospinal fluid (2).
