Abstract
There is no single test specific for pancreatitis. Therefore, in the patient with upper abdominal pain and hyperamylasemia presumed to have pancreatitis, conditions such as perforated ulcer, and acute cholecystitis must be considered and ruled out. The presence of free air on flat plate and upright of the abdomen will identify 80% of patients with a perforated peptic ulcer. In patients without free air but still suspected of having a perforated peptic ulcer, the matter can be settled with a water-soluble contrast study.
