New Aspects of Solid State High Resolution NMR of Protons

Abstract

The state-of-the-art of measuring proton shielding tensors in single crystals by multiple pulse techniques is outlined. Aromatic systems are chosen as an example. The experimental results are strongly affected by intermolecular shielding contributions. Features characteristic of the shielding of aromatic systems emerge after taking intermolecular contributions into account.

    The bottleneck for the full analysis is the structure of terephthalic acid. It has been reported by C.J. Brown and M. Bailey, Acta Cryst. 22, 387 (1967) but the data given for at least form II are evidently grossly in error. We intend to determine the orientations of the ring and the carboxyl groups by solid state C-13 NMR.Google Scholar
