Does Arteficial Lowering of Plasma Free Fatty Acids Stimulate Adrenocortical Function?
Summary
Since lowering the blood sugar stimulates pituitary-adrenocortical function it was investigated whether lowering of plasma free fatty acids also exerts a similar effect. Plasma free acid concentration was lowered in a group of healthy subjects by administration of methylisoxazole-carbonic acid which acts as an inhibitor of adipose tissue lipolysis. While plasma free fatty acids decreased markedly during 6 hours after administration of methylisoxazole-carbonic acid, plasma Cortisol concentration as well as blood sugar remained completely unchanged. This observation indicates that acute lowering of plasma free fatty acids does not stimulate adrenocortical function.
