Abstract

One hundred and thirteen CT studies of 107 patients ranging in age from several hours to 6 months were reviewed to study the anterolateral and posterolateral fontanelles. The lateral fontanelles were always patent in the first month of life and were almost always closed by 6 months of age. The appearance of the fontanelles before closure is variable. The membrane may be thick and nodular, thick and smooth, or thin. The membrane may show foci of ossification. There is generally uniform enhancement of the membrane. The presence of irregular nodularity and enhancement of the membrane should be recognized as a normal variant.
