Abstract

Investigations of the splitting of the energy levels of atoms in an electric field F (Stark effect, 1913) and in a magnetic field B (Zeeman effect, 1896) have provided important confirmations of the validity of the main assumptions of quantum theory. Fundamentals of the quantum theory of the Stark and Zeeman effects are treated in detail in the well known monograph of Bethe and Salpeter [5.1], and also in textbooks on quantum mechanics [5.2] and theoretical spectroscopy [5.3].
