Architectural Aspects of Future Private Communication Systems
Abstract
The latest achievements in optical fibre, VLSI technology and micro-electronics as well as a growing demand for telecommunications promote the development of high-speed communication networks, preparing the broadband ISDN and the integrated broadband communication network. New services are requested including distribution of TV programmes, full-motion video phones and multimedia services handling simultaneously voice, video and data information. Todays separate worlds of data and telephony communication will close up and merge. Value-Added Network Services and Intelligent Networks will lead to new network applications, which are not fully described yet or even unknown. Facing this background, industry is challenged to develop highly flexible systems, which can accommodate future needs allowing a cost-effective integration of existing equipment by evolution strategies. In this paper, requirements for future private communication systems are stated, aspects of their hardware and software architecture are discussed and prospects of further developments are given.
