Examination Technique

Abstract

All of the MRI examinations presented in this book were carried out on superconducting MRI devices (Siemens Magnetom). In the period from 1 July 1984 to 31 December 1985 the studies were conducted at a field strength of 0.35 T. After upgrading to 1.0 T (gradient field 6 mT) in January of 1986 special sequences, software and surface coils for studies in the head and neck region were developed. Single measurements were carried out on prototypes devices in the Siemens research center in Erlangen, Germany. Since spring 1990 numerous studies have been performed on a 1.5T machine of the newest generation (Magnetom 63 SP). All examinations are conducted only after intensive investigation and questioning of the patient about possible risks. Every subject has to give written consent for the procedure to be carried out; an additional briefing is given during the clinical examination if administration of the contrast agent Gd-DTPA is planned (phase III trials).
