Abstract
Rainfall is the major environmental factor affecting biological productivity in the desert biome (Sect. 2.2) and, consequently, the food available to arthropods (Cloudsley-Thompson and Idris 1964; Crawford 1981; Louw and Seely 1982; Wallwork 1982; Whitford 1986; etc.) and reptiles (Mayhew 1966a,ó, 1967, 1968; Ballinger 1977; Dunham 1978; Vitt et al. 1978; Worthington 1982).
