Abstract

The growth of cells in culture is controlled by stimulatory or inhibitory factors. More than 20 different polypeptide growth factors have been structurally and functionally characterized, including cloning of their cDNAs (Table 1). The total number of polypeptide growth, factors is likely to be considerably higher, since additional factors, that have not yet been fully characterized, are known from their specific biological activities. There are also factors that specifically inhibit cell growth, e.g. transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) [1], interferons [2] and tumor necrosis factor [3]. Moreover, the same factor may, depending on cell type and culture conditions, act both as a growth factor and a growth inhibitor [4a]
